Moving Out, Moving On With An Airbnb Shuffle

Updated: Oct 13

I’m jumping on for a quick update about my move to Oviedo, España. Last week was stressful as I moved into temporary lodgings at an Airbnb. My lease at my Pasadena apartment had come to an end. Booking an Airbnb—what I'm calling an "Airbnb shuffle"—is always a bit of a gamble. Unfortunately, my first choice was not great. It had an unwelcoming appearance outside.

When the Photos Lie

Inside wasn’t much better. The cramped quarters looked nothing like the online photos. The kitchen light didn’t work, and the bathroom had mildew and a moldy odor. Noise from the people upstairs was so loud that I might as well have had roommates.

To be fair, the hosts were responsive and prompt. However, they seemed to be a management setup rather than the owners themselves. For example, they didn’t know what type of light was in the kitchen. I had to send them a photo. Their initial suggestion for the non-functioning light was to toggle the wall switch off and on multiple times. I’m no Einstein, but I’m pretty certain it isn’t the light switch.

After eight days, an electrician arrived to replace the light. By then, I had already informed the host that I was so uncomfortable that there was no way I could stay for another two weeks. My departure date was set for July 30.

Second Try, Much Better Vibe

I chose a new Airbnb, and this time, I struck gold. The neighborhood was nice, and the surroundings were pleasant. The zen courtyard provided a peaceful atmosphere. The interior was spotless, including the bathroom. There were nice touches like free water and chocolate (which I will leave for the next guest) in the full-size fridge.

The indoor slippers were a nice surprise. The crockery was good quality, and the bed and sofa were comfortable. I also had a full all-purpose table where I could eat and work. Plus, there was plenty of closet space.

The property is called The Peacock Art Showroom because there are peacocks wandering around the neighborhood.

Funnily enough, I once stayed at an Airbnb in Accra, Esther’s Hotel, that also had peacocks on the premises.

Ready for the Real Departure

Now, I have some peace of mind and should be in good standing to tackle my next move—the big one!

Moving can be a daunting task. The experience of transitioning from one place to another often comes with unexpected challenges. However, it can also lead to delightful discoveries. My journey has shown me that with patience and a bit of luck, you can find a place that feels like home, even if it takes a couple of tries.

I needed to order essay writing service for a complex political science assignment. EssayBox not only met my deadline but also included data from peer-reviewed journals. It wasn’t just fluff—they really dug into the research. My professor gave it an A without any edits. If you’re skeptical like I was, give them one try—you’ll be impressed.
